ON THE MOVE When hazards or other issues are identified by staff in an upcoming move or refurbishment or even after the move has taken place, make sure that these are considered, options provided for addressing the issues raised and reasons given for the action taken as quickly and clearly as possible. The following tips are worth considering: - Your Health and Safety Representatives (HSRS) can play a key role in keeping the lines of communication open and in demonstrating that your process for any move is one that is being done in an open, and safe manner.
- Make sure that HSRs are involved in the planning and inspection process and that they are given to opportunity to report back to staff regularly.
- Encourage HSRs to walk through the areas affected at different stages of the refurbishment etc and prior to moving into a new building.
- Check areas outside of the actual area to be occupied, but that staff will use regularly, eg toilets, utility rooms, kitchens, first aid rooms, and entry and egress.
- Make sure that staff going into the new buildings are given appropriate training in the emergency procedures as these may be different to those in their old location.
- Induction may also be necessary for the use of new furniture if chairs and desks have different features to those previously used (ie height adjustment etc). SRC Solutions can provide advice on furniture that meets the requirements of a broad range of individuals undertaking a variety of tasks whilst ensuring compliance with Australian Standards.
